What Determines Stun Gun Effectiveness and How to Increase It

Stun gun effectiveness depends on a number of factors. Here are some of the major ones.

One major determinant is the amount of voltage. The more voltage, the more effective it is. The lower the voltage, the more seconds it takes to incapacitate an attacker. Although voltages as low as 50,000 have been known to bring down targets effectively, consider getting a stun gun with several hundreds of thousands of volts.

The aggressor's size should also be considered. Bigger people are simply harder to take down. Also note that a more determined attacker will be more difficult to subdue.

To increase the effectiveness of a stun gun, you must hit your target firm and square. Always aim for areas that are hard and slow to move, such as the chest, stomach, back, groin, hips, shoulders, and the base of the neck. Hitting your attacker in the arms, hands, legs, or feet is less effective because he can quickly pull these away and regroup.

Several stun gun companies give the following stun time-effectiveness guidelines.

A stun between a half second and one full second will cause intense, startling pain and will deter your attacker from advancing (hopefully).

A two to three second stun will temporarily disorient the attacker and cause the aggressor to fall to the ground, allowing you to escape.

A stun of three seconds or more will completely disorient and drop an attacker for several seconds to several minutes.

Stun guns can and do provide a very effective means of self defense. Otherwise, military and law enforcement personnel wouldn't be using them currently. But they are not 100% infallible. Mistakes can be made in a scuffle, such as missing a target or being too slow to draw. Or, if you do everything correctly, there's a slight chance a determined attacker will overpower your stun. When using a stun gun (or any weapon for that matter), you must accept and be prepared for these risks.

To further increase stun gun effectiveness and your chances of thwarting off an attack, use the following tips.

Always arm yourself whenever you are away from large crowds, or are in any location deemed unsafe.

Purchase stun guns that have wrist strap pins. These stun guns can only function when a special pin is inserted into a slot (usually at the bottom). The pin is attached to a strap that wraps securely around your wrist. This ensures that if you lose your stun gun in a struggle, the pin comes out, and it cannot be used against you.

If the situation allows, always warn the aggressor that you are armed. Do this both verbally and with a test shot of your stun gun. There's a good chance he'll walk away and leave you alone.

Stay poised, be ready to engage, and focus on striking your target accurately and firmly. Unless you've purchased a stun gun that shoots projectiles, you must accept the possibility of a close range struggle.

When you've subdued your attacker, don't stick around. Get away as quick as you can and get help.

Practice. Get accustomed to holding it, turning it on and off, and most importantly stunning. Go through scenarios with a partner, stun gun off, of course. The main idea is to become familiar with finding your window to zap in various situations.
