Install Security Motion Detectors for Greater
Peace of Mind
Security motion detectors are
devices that detect “movement.” The sensed movement is converted into an
electronic or radio signal, which in turn can activate other devices.
This is why motion sensors can be a powerful addition to your security
system. They can deter intruders by turning on outside flood lights,
walkway lights, indoor lamps and appliances, or even a blaring siren. In
monitoring applications, they can save time and energy by activating
cameras only when motion is detected in the domain being surveillanced.
Advanced units can remotely alert the owner, local law enforcement, or
security monitoring services. Motion sensors also make a security system
more complete because they can create trip alerts in places that window
and door sensors can’t work, such as air vents, skylights, chimneys, and
other crawl spaces. Motion sensors can also be set up on your home’s or
business’ perimeter to create an extra security buffer.
Security motion detectors use
a number of technologies to sense moving objects. For example, passive
infrared sensors look for hot spots in a particular area, such as a
person’s body heat. However, they can be tripped with sudden blasts of
light (i.e. from a car headlight) and create false alarms. Ultrasonic
sensors blast high frequency sound pulses and measure the bounceback
time and frequency (like sonar technology). When an object is in motion,
the sound pulses bouncing off it will take different amounts of time to
return to the sensor and have vary frequencies. Lastly, microwave
sensors shoot microwaves throughout the room and look for changes in the
amount of time these microwaves return to the sensor, similar to
ultrasonic sensors. Dual technology sensors use two or more different
types of motion sensing technologies to increase accuracy and decrease
false alarms. For example, a passive infrared ultrasonic sensor will
first try to sense hotspots. When a hotspot is picked up, it will switch
to its ultrasonic technology to verify movement.
