Security Intercom Systems Provide Better Visitor Screening

Security intercom systems increase safety in your home or business by screening people at your property entrance. They let you know who is standing out there before you even open your door. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to open your doors or gates to find out who is visiting. This exposes you to a potential attack and your property becomes much easier to breach. Even if you have a screen door or door viewer, they still put you in close proximity of the person on the other end and increase your risk of being hurt by that person if he or she has mal intentions. Intercoms are much more effective than the average door viewer because it creates distance from you and the person on the other side of the door. You can question the reason for the visit, all the while being unseen and at a safer distance. If the intercom system is combined with a video camera, or is equipped with one, you can not only converse with the visitor, but get an actual visual of him or her, without having to open the door at all. Or, if you want to be more discrete, you can take a look at who’s at the door and then decide whether to acknowledge or ignore the visitor.

The most basic form of security intercoms are audio only systems. These systems are ideal for those who are comfortable with screening visitors only by voice and without seeing them, can get a good visual discretely from a distant window, or have security cameras already installed. Most audio intercoms work like walkie-talkies. A visitor would push and hold the chime, or talk button to get the attention of someone inside. The visitor would then release the button and listen for a response. The person at home, if he or she chooses, would push and hold the talk button to respond, and so forth. Some allow the owner to just listen to what’s going on out there with the push of a button. Yet, others can allow two way simultaneous conversation just like on a phone. Audio intercoms are easy to install and can be wired in or wireless.

Video security intercom systems transmit audio just like audio only systems, but also provide video feed to allow the owner to both see and talk to visitors. This way, the owner can view visitors discretely before making the decision to open the door, send them away, or completely ignore them. Video feeds are activated by motion sensors or by a visitor pressing the doorbell. Video is transmitted to a receiver on the inside. Some models can take date/time stamped pictures of each visitor, or even record video clips of each visit so the owner can archive them for future reference. These systems can be wired in or wireless.

Phone intercoms connect to your home or business phone line. When a visitor pushes the doorbell button, all the phones will ring. This allows visitor screening from any room that has a phone installed. Having a cordless phone can be quite efficient and convenient when using these types of intercoms. Some models can also transmit video. Typically, phone intercoms have to be wired in.

Some security intercom systems can work with an electronic door strike. These mechanisms will open the door for visitors with the push of a button. The door strike can be activated from the main console or satellite consoles throughout the home or business. If a phone intercom system is used, the door can be opened with the push of a phone button (usually the star key) or series of phone buttons.
