They come in many different forms and the best one for you depends on your particular needs and situations. Below are the major types of pepper spray devices.

Small Canister Form
This category of pepper spray is probably the most versatile of all of them. They are about 3-4 inches tall or smaller, weigh about 1/2 ounce - 2 ounces, and fit in the palm of your hand. You can easily carry them on a key chain or inside your jean pockets. They can be used on the go or at home. They are easy to grip, quick to draw, have a decent effective shooting range of 8-10 feet. Main advantages: versatility and easy of use. Main disadvantages: easy to misplace or forget to bring.

Large Canister Form
These pepper spray products weigh from about ten ounces to one pound or more! They stand about 1/2 foot to 1 foot tall, and are characterized by a large solution canister topped off by a pistol-like actuator (handle/trigger). They have long ranges of 15-20 feet and their spray compositions are thick, cloudy, and wide. They are often used by law enforcement for crowd control. A lot of campers use them to defend against dangerous animals such as bears, coyotes, and mountain lions. This type of pepper spray is also best for home usage. Main advantages: big and intimidating, can cover long and wide areas, easy to find. Main disadvantages: bulky and heavy, impractical to carry around, often needs both arms for most effective use.

Gun Form
Designed for distance and accuracy. Their schematics closely resemble that of a pistol. Most will sit comfortably at your waste in a holster, but some can fit in your pocket. They come with an aiming function for more precise targeting, and have very long ranges of 20-25 feet. The blast from this type of pepper spray device is very fast and powerful, dumping lots of solution into an attackers orifices. Main advantages: accurate, long-reaching, powerful, can shoot accurately in windy conditions. Main disadvantage: usually limited to 1-2 shots. If you miss, game over.

Grenade Form
These pepper spray products are designed for use at the longest of distances. How long? As far as you can throw them. They can also be dropped from above, or lobbed from short distances. After hitting the ground, they will disburse a fine mist of pepper spray solution and spin in a 360 degree fashion for 10-30 seconds. They are used mainly by law enforcement for crowd control and area confinement (i.e. smoking assailants out). Main advantages: have the longest reaching ranges, disbursement covers large areas. Main disadvantages: high chance of overshooting or undershooting target, a single target can easily dodge or run away from pepper spray grenades unless he is cornered and you want to smoke him out, can be caught and thrown back to you.

Concealed Form
Pepper spray solution is stored in what seems like ordinary objects, such as pens, pagers, key chain kubotons, lipstick, fitness weights, and even rings. Main advantages: puts the element of surprise on your side and can hit an attacker when he's least expecting it. Main disadvantages: generally shoots short distances, awkward to grip and discharge, small capacity.

Foam Solution
Some pepper spray products will contain foam instead of liquid. The spray has a very large diameter. When the solution hits the face of the attacker, it will expand and cause a blindfold effect. It is very hard to wipe off as it gets increasingly ground into the skin with friction. Main advantage: large spray diameter, covers the face of the attacker easily. Main disadvantage: doesn't shoot well in windy conditions.

Gel Solution
Other pepper spray devices contain a gel solution. There are several advantages to gel. Pepper gel shoots further, is thicker than liquid, and very sticky. It is very difficult to get off. Main advantage: shoots further, sticks to attacker, shoots well in windy conditions. Main disadvantage: fewer shots are available compared to liquid pepper spray of similar size, shooting distance becomes shorter and shorter with every spray.
