Using Knives for Self Defense

This section deals with the use of knives for self defense. Using a knife is a much more aggressive method of personal protection. With adequate training a knife can end an attack quickly, since it is significantly more damaging than many other self defense devices available on the market. Because of their more deadly nature, we don’t recommend that you use knives as a primary means of self defense. However, a knife can give you that last chance for survival in truly desperate times.

Links to in-depth knife self defense topics are provided at the bottom of this page. You’ll find useful information on the ideal defense knife features, the different types of fighting knives, where to get high quality personal protection knives, and more. However, before you dash off and start your quest to master the art of knife fighting, read the caveat below. Make sure you understand the implications involved when using a knife in self defense.

When using a knife in an altercation you’re playing a dangerous game, from a physical and psychological standpoint. Are you prepared to slash or stab another human being? Are you prepared to see blood? Even if you are, your attacker can turn the tables by disarming you of the knife and use it to hurt you. It might be you who gets carved up. Are you proficient enough to defend yourself when you become the person at the other end of the knife point? And even if you are successful in using your knife, do you think you can take the mental trauma that can result from a gory ending? Can you live with the fact that you severely hurt or killed someone? These are questions that you must answer with an astounding “yes.” If you are not prepared physically and mentally to use a knife, the end results can be devastating.

Don’t forget the legal issues involved when using knives for self defense. Knife users are generally frowned upon by law enforcement. Questions like “did he really have to do that?”and “was he really in that much danger?’ will underlie the whole ordeal. There is a thin line between defending oneself with a knife and bringing a knife to a fight. Many people cross that line. For example, if your attacker shows a willingness to stop and you decide to knife him out of heated retaliation, you may be seen as the true offender. Lawyers and the media are very good at spinning the facts, and exaggerating details. Additionally, each country, state, and even municipality has its own unique regulations on knives regarding issues such as the type of knife a person can carry, knife length, blade length, how you can carry a knife on your person, where you can take a knife, the very definition of when the use of a knife in a fight is considered appropriate for self defense, and many more. They can vary drastically from place to place. If you fail to adhere to these regulations, you will have a lot of legal hell to pay.

If you are absolutely sure that you want to carry a knife as a self defense weapon, we highly recommend that you educate yourself as much as possible on how to properly use the knife. Not only that, you must be knowledgeable on how to defend yourself against a knife attack, just in case something goes unexpectedly wrong. Read books and watch videos extensively while practicing with a partner (fake knives of course), and get hands on training at a knife fighting or self defense school. Practice, practice, practice! Lastly, know the knife laws of the areas that you frequent.
