Defense Batons - Simple and Very Effective
Defense batons are among the simplest forms of
self defense weapons. They look like sticks or rods (well, when it comes
down to it, they are) and are small enough to be wielded with one hand.
However, don't let their simplicity fool you. There is a reason why
batons are used by law enforcement agents and martial artists worldwide.
They are among the most versatile and effective
weapons one can use in hand to hand combat. Batons, at least the goods
ones, are packed with steel, lead, or hard plastic. They can immobilize
an opponent by using a strike to cause blunt force trauma. They also can
immobilize by using a submission maneuver to either control the
opponent, or cause a sprain, dislocation, or break.
Defense batons come in the following forms.
Kubotan
The smallest, simplest, and most discrete of the group. Kubotans are
around five inches long and fit on a key ring. They are easily gripped
by one hand and can be used to flail your keys into your attackers face.
Even more effective is grasping it firmly in your palm and delivering a
hammer blow to the head or sensitive areas of the body such as the neck,
collar bone, chest, ribs, and solo plexus. In situations where you have
to grapple with your attacker, you can apply pressure with your kubotan
to sensitive areas such as the metacarpals, and he'll surely let go!
Long
Whereas a kubotan is meant to be small and discreet, a long baton is
meant to be large and intimidating. They are often used for riot
control. They run anywhere between one to three feet long, have
considerable girth, are heavy, durable, and resist a lot of force. A
blow from a long baton can be quite damaging. The user can also use long
defense batons to strike from a distance, perform blocks or restraints,
and deliver chokes.
Expandable
Expandable batons are the most versatile of all batons. They start off
as a kubotan, but with a flick of the wrist expand to anywhere from one
to three feet. Thus, they can be used to combat your attacker up close
or from a distance, enabling you to peform hammer blows, swinging
strikes, blocks, and chokes. One unique feature it has is the ball
fixture at the end. This helps concentrate all the momentum of a kubotan
hammer blow or expanded swinging blow, making it particularly
devastating, even fatal.
Concealed Knife/Sword
At first glance these look like a regular bludgeon baton, and they can
be used in this fashion if one may choose to. However, unscrewing the
shaft reveals a blade of about 1 1/2 to 2 feet long. This by itself
should scare the crap out of your attacker and send them running.
However, if you have to, you can deliver a slashing or stabbing attack.
Additionally, you can use the shaft simultaneously to perform a
combination of bludgeoning and knifing attacks, and to aid with defense.
Lastly, the shaft is often attachable to the blades handle to devise a
spear. To buy defense batons, you can visit websites such as
